This instrument will become your constant companion. Add the PC Interface and it will become your diarist. Get the Hard Case -- it'll save your Kestrel 4000 quite a beating. The NK Website really doesn't do justice to the tremendously customizable displays you can arrange to provide just what you want the way you want it.
I don't leave the house without my Kestrel 4000 on my belt. I like to keep the Sampling Rate set at ten-minute intervals; with 250 Data Points (for EACH of the ten measured parameters!), I maintain a weather record just under two days long (about 40 hours). The Sampling Rate is yet another feature you can control.

My unit has used the Kestrel 4000 for the past 5 years with great success. Greatly reduced the amount of equipment to carry while maintaining or increasing the quality of readings.

We purchased the Kestrel 4000 when it was first introduced. Seven years later, my Kestrel 4000 is still going strong!

I've owned a Kestrel 4000 for over three years. An invaluable instrument for my industrial hygiene consulting business. Reliable and tough. Thanks for a great weather instrument.

I have been using a 4000 since 2002 and it has functioned flawlessly to date. I use it biking and rowing to observe (and predict) the impact of wind on speed. The altimeter is perfect for tracking ascent and decent when biking in hilly areas and the barometric information is a good indicator for helping to predict a change in weather. Finally, after 6 years I am having a problem with the menu but fortunately the NK service has been exemplary.

I have been comparing portable weather instruments for over 6 years now. I had concluded that Kestrel devices were the best; but when the 4000 model was developed and marketed, I was certain that my comparing versions was no longer necessary. It has everything (and more) that anyone would need to monitor instant weather condoitions and record trends. I use the 4000NV for competitive long distance rifle shooting and in emergency services. I finally purchased one and am extremely happy with its capabilities. I also am extremely pleased with customer service. When I received it, the battery compartment door had a chipped piece of plastic holding the battery contacts. A call to NK resulted in a proper repacemnet and the plastic had been upgraded to a metal screw. I strongly and highly recommend the 4000NV.

I’ve had my Kestrel for 3-4 years. I used it for long range shooting and found a good deal of other uses for it. It got stolen 4 months ago now. I really know I used it a lot. I look forward to replacing it with a 4500

I have seen this device being used first hand working as a FF/Paramedic in determining local weather conditions for HAZMAT incidents where wind direction can be the difference between lives saved and lives lost. Amazing!

I really love my Kestrel 4000 because I do a lot of camping and hiking cross altitude all times of the year. All the features that this unit offers fits my every need to make sure I am prepared for every environmental condition. It also works great to use with the computer and store and graph data! Great job from the designers at Nielsen Kellerman!

This meter was initially purchased for following weather during Wildland Fire operations. I'm afraid the old standard belt weather kit may find itself going the way of the dinosaurs. Every bit of information is available and easily accessed one-handed through the keypad. The user definable screens allow three conditions to be monitored at the same time without searching. The saved conditions allow trending for the next days, greatly improving the ability to plan for work periods and safe operations. It is light- weight and compact yet very durable. It has resisted sand, heat, and mild impact well. I have yet to test the water resistance ability. I also use it during competive shooting/reloading. It allows for monitoring of the exact conditions under which the physics of the bullet is fired. At long distance ranges this can mean the diffence of scoring or not. When you review the targets and think "why is this shooting session different than a previous one?" The Kestrel will let you know the atmospheric changes. Combine it with a good PDA and ballistic program and marksmanship can be greatly improved. The kestrel 4000 meter is hardy and will stand up to real life abuse. The battery usage is perfect. A new set of high quality cells will run 24 hours a day for a week. The only place I could see where improvement could be made is in the hinge and latch of the battery access door . This area was not finely "milled" on my unit. The latch release protrudes outside of the body of the unit and could be damaged if impacted or caught on something. Don't let this deter you from considering purchasing a Kestrel meter. This is the one to get! SAFETY FIRST!

I bought the Kestrel 4000 for reading all the important variables for long range shooting. The Kestrel 4000 works great and does everything I need it to do and more.

My organization uses the Kestrel 4000 for determining weather conditions for firefighters in wildland and structural situations. It has performed magnificently and has provided us with information that has and most assuredly will continue to save firefighters from climate related injuries and stress. The device's ability to calculate the humidity index and wet bulb readings has also helped greatly this summer. We have not used it in a winter setting, but if it performs as well as it has this summer it will be great.

The Kestrel 4000 is an indispensable tool in the industrial hygiene business! I rely on this meter almost daily to ensure the health and safety of my clients on the job site! My firm is so pleased with the Kestrel brand of meters that we are likely going to purchase additional units for each of our field staff!

This Kestrel Works very good. The batteries last forever. I have found it to be very accurate. It's amazing. I only wish that it would record wind speed without you manually having to ask it to. It would be nice if it would do it automatically.

I am currently a sniper team leader on my second tour in Iraq. I have put my Kestrel 4000 through extreme heat, dust, rain, mud, impact, and concussion. Day after day it continues to perform and is one of the best pieces of equipment in my pack. My job depends on knowing the weather and knowing it immediately, thanks to this I can.
