This regatta season was a great opportunity to talk with customers about our products, new and old. We got a lot of useful questions, some basic ones and some more complicated. After considering the most common questions people have about each product, we compiled a list of topics and began recording short videos, because it's a lot easier to see it live than to read my poorly worded explanations.

We’ve shot a handful of videos and are in the process of adding more. Your feedback on topics that should be added is always welcome; your feedback on my shirt being wrinkled or the dirt under Ben's fingernails in not welcome. We're rowers here, not actors! We do, however, hope that these videos will help you to better learn your NK products so that you can use them to their fullest potential. Check out the ever-growing collection HERE and stop back by regularly for updates.

Product Special

Free Surge Rate Bracket

This month's special is related to the new wireless StrokeCoach with Surge Rate. The new StrokeCoach comes equipped with a great mounting strap that you can wrap around a wing rigger, foot stretcher, or anywhere else you can think of on your boat. But if you own your own boat and want to use a more permanent fixture, the Surge T-bracket and angle bracket are a great addition to your new StrokeCoach. For November, each new wireless StrokeCoach that you purchase will include the standard mounting strap as well as a Surge T-bracket OR a Surge angle bracket. Just specify your choice with your order.

Special good through November 30

New Product Spotlight

AUDIO ADAPTER

Here's the next latest-and-greatest from NK to help you achieve your rowing goals. This one is geared toward coaches and coxswains, so all you single scullers can move on if you like. The new redesigned Cox Box is wildly popular, and we're thrilled that it’s working out so well for everyone. Here’s an accessory for the new Cox Box that will allow you to incorporate other forms of technology into your training.

This audio adapter allows you to connect the standard microphone to the Cox Box while simultaneously connecting a 2-way radio, digital voice recorder, or mp3 player. With a 2-way radio (walkie talkie), a coach can communicate with his crew through the boat speakers at the same time as the coxswain. This is great for those times when a coach can’t be on the water with his crew, like when traveling to a regatta.

With a digital voice recorder, a coxswain can record every call during a practice or race and review the audio later with a coach. This is especially useful for high school coxswains who need to send a recording to various colleges for the application process.

Finally, if your coach allows it, you can use this audio adapter to play music through the speakers while still allowing the coxswain to communicate with the crew. This is nice for long steady state rows, so long as you can decide on what type of music to play!

Consider purchasing our waterproof and floatable bag for use with your mp3 player or voice recorder. The design allows you to use an ipod, iphone, or digital voice recorder while keeping your device safe from rain and splash. Check it out HERE.

Cox Box Luv

Ali Williams

If you haven’t heard the hoopla, the Great 8 that has been touring the world and kicking butt everywhere it goes is a collection of the World’s finest single scullers that decided to put together an 8+ for this fall racing season. In one of their recent regattas, they were given the opportunity to demo the new Coxmate amplification system. Soon after that regatta, we received a call from the coxswain Ali Williams who was ready to come back to the Cox Box system and immediately purchased one before their appearance at the Head of the Charles. Now, we’re not saying that their first place finish in the blinding snow at the Charles had anything to do with our Cox Box, but Ali sure does look happy with her new Cox Box in this picture! Congrats guys, and thanks for giving the rowing world something fun to talk about this fall.

New Tech

Surge Rate Technology

Today's electronics marketplace is demanding more technology and fewer restrictions from new devices. We are rapidly becoming a wireless community, one that can stay connected without being connected, so to speak. This sort of progress isn't just limited to telephones and video games. At NK, we're working hard to bring you the reliability you've come to expect from our products, but with much greater flexibility within the rowing and paddling world than ever before.

To this point, the best way for a rower to obtain basic performance data was by using the StrokeCoach with a wire harness, seat sensor, and seat magnet. This technology has been the standard for quite some time, and it continues to work rather well. The seat passes over the sensor with every stroke, the magnet trips the sensor, and the StrokeCoach analyzes that data to provide a continuously-updated stroke rating. This works great in many circumstances, but what happens if you row in a number of different club boats, some of which don't have a wiring harness, seat sensor, and seat magnet? Or what if stroke seat is wired, but bow seat wants to know the stroke rate? Or what if you paddle a kayak or row an adaptive shell that doesn’t have a sliding seat? Until now, these have all been limitations for the StrokeCoach. Until now, rowers have been forced to accept these limitations. Until now.

The newest version of the NK StrokeCoach, known as the StrokeCoach with Surge technology, utilizes a 3-axis accelerometer to detect the surging nature of rowing or paddling and provides all of the original StrokeCoach data with no strings – er, wires – attached...

SUPPORT

NK Grant

Each year NK strives to support developing athletes in the sport of rowing with product sponsorship. In addition to being a chief sponsor for USRowing, we also provide personal support for individuals who are working hard to meet their goals. This year we will be awarding 20 athletes $250 each to be used toward NK products that will help them achieve their athletic goals, whatever they may be. In order to be eligible for one of these grants, we need to hear from you. Give us some details from your rowing resume, tell us your goals and what you want to achieve in the sport, and let us know why you could use some NK electronics to help you achieve those goals. Submissions are being accepted until the end of November, and the submission form can be found HERE.

Recipe

Foo Yung

Any way you spell it, Foo Yung is a great asian recipe that you can modify to work with the content of your fridge. These quick little egg pancakes are a great source of lean protein, iron, and great vitamins from the bean sprouts. And they’re super easy to whip up after a long practice or day at the office.

Rice – make some rice (preferably brown to be healthy) according to the package instructions. No more explanation needed

Foo Yung Pancakes:

  • 6 eggs beaten
  • 1 cup shredded chicken (cooked) OR cooked shrimp***
  • 1/4 cup diced green onions
  • 1/8 oz bag of mung bean sprouts

*** shredded chicken is made by boiling chicken breasts, cooling, then using two forks as rakes to shred the meat. Alternatively you could use any form of cooked chicken that you have left over and shred it or cut it into small pieces.

Sauce:

  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp corn starch
  • 1 Tbsp low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1/2 - 3/4 cup chicken stock

In a large bowl, beat the eggs just until uniform in texture. Add shredded chicken or shrimp, green onions, bean sprouts, salt, pepper, and any other ingredients you want in there. Mix together well; this should not be a soup consistency, the eggs are more of a binder than a broth. Scoop a generous spoonful into a pan pre-heated to medium with a dash of olive or vegetable oil. Spread the scoop into a pancake size and allow it to cook for 2-3 minutes. Check for a nice golden brown color on the underside before flipping, then cook for another 2-3 minutes on the other side. Remove the pancake to a plate and repeat until the mix is gone. This should provide anywhere between 4-6 pancakes.

While the pancakes are cooking, combine all ingredients for the sauce in a small stockpot and whisk until the cornstarch is combined. Cook over medium-high heat until bubbles form, then turn down to low and cook an additional 3 minutes until slightly thickened. Serve pancakes over a bed of rice and drizzle the sauce over the top. Serve with low-sodium soy sauce in addition to the sauce if desired.
