NK Boathouse Visits

NK is proud of our rowing background and knowledge of the sport over the past 30 years. NK is a company that makes products that are designed by rowers for rowers. The person you call for tech support is a rower. The person that runs the company is a rower. Most rowers on Boathouse Row in Philadelphia know someone who works for NK. We want to bring that community presence to your boathouse.

Over the past two years NK has increased its efforts to reach out to our domestic customers. Based in Philadelphia, we have visited many of the clubs in our area. When NK comes in for a boathouse visit, we:

  • Help you inventory all of your NK equipment - what you've got, and what it needs to be ready to do its job for you.
  • Review all of your shell wiring and perform basic on-site repairs and installs.
  • Prepare a written report with recommendations for required maintenance and strategic equipment additions.

These visits have been a huge success and we are expanding our visits across the country. Are you near any of the regattas on NK's spring schedule? Do you want an NK pro to answer your questions, help with installation and troubleshoot problems? Send an email to newsletter@nkhome.com to request a boathouse visit. If your boathouse is not near any of the regatta locations, but you are attending one of regattas, email NK to come by your trailer for a regatta visit.

Don't Forget About Your Cox Box

In the middle of winter, your Cox Box is probably the last thing on your mind. However, make sure you treat it well so it will perform when racing season starts again. Did you know: NK suggests that your Cox Box should NOT be charged for more than three consecutive days. Charging for longer could have negative effects on the battery life.

So what to do in this "off" season? Charge for a solid 24 hours, then unplug and store somewhere cool, where it cannot get overheated. When practice time comes close, pull it out the night before, charge it overnight and you should be good to go. Remember to clean and maintain your Cox Box. More insightful information on your most valuable tool can be found at www.nkhome.com.

Simon Says is a new monthly column just for coxswains. If you have a coxing question or a topic you'd like to read about, email Laura@rowingeducation.org.

Tabata!

We all troll the web on occasion - of course not at work - so we thought it would be fun to pass on some links we find interesting each month. As we move from "steady state" winter mode towards Spring training, here is an interesting article that look at the effectiveness of a "high intensity intermittent" training protocol. AKA - intervals! The studied protocol was even shorter and more intense than most rowing workouts. Now commonly known as "Tabata" intervals, it can be a fun and effective change-up on the erg, on the water, or with body weight or circuit exercises. Got 14 minutes to exercise?
