Winter Thoughts

It’s that time of year when many of us spend time torturing ourselves on the erg. I say torture mostly because, being on the water in a boat is just so much more enjoyable to me than creeping down into my cold, dark basement at 6am. Instead of thinking about how nice it would be to be outside, I’ve been thinking a lot about hamstrings lately. Good erging and rowing technique requires the ability to achieve a “body over” position before coming up the slide. Body over should occur at the pelvis and the hip, not just by rounding the spine. In essence, one is flexing the hip and tiliting the pelvis anteriorly (forward) to achieve a good head up position. This sounds simple, but can be difficult and painful if the hamstrings are too tight.

To understand why this is true, we need to talk about a little bit of anantomy. The hamstrings consist of three muscles, two of the three insert behind the knee on the inside, and one inserts on the outside.

All three originate from the ischial tuberosity of the pelvis. The ischial tubersosity is easy to find, it is the boney prominence we sit on, the one that you can feel if you press down on either butt check near the top of your leg. When the knee is in a straight position, tilting the pelvis forward stretches the hamstrings. If the hamstrings are too tight (from not stretching!) as you tilt the pelvis forward (using opposite muscles) the knees will bend. Or if you force the knees to stay down, the pelvis will not tilt forward enough, and thus we see people achieving the body over position by flexing (rounding forward) the spine.

To see if you have tight hamstrings, a simple test is to sit with your back straight up against a wall, and both legs on the floor, knees straight. Now lean forward from the hip and feel your pelvis tilt forward. If it’s difficult or painful to keep your knees straight, you need to start working on lengthening those hamstrings! The same position against the wall can also be used to stretch the hamstrings, this time tilt forward at the hip and hold the position you can achieve for a count of 15. Do this several times a day, everyday, and you can improve your hamstring flexibility. Winter is a great time to work on this, and help make the transition back into a boat all that much better!
