Have You Heard What Coaches
Are Saying About the SpeedCoach XL?

Coaches across the country are using the SpeedCoach XL to help them squeeze every bit of speed out of their crews this racing season.

Most coaches have used an NK SpeedCoach at some point in their careers to gain a better understanding of what a crew can do. Until the SpeedCoach XL, that usually meant reviewing stored memory long after the row, or relying on shouted updates from the coxswain. Without a doubt, having instant feedback of a boat's performance while coaching is the ultimate tool for learning what really works.

Mike Davenport, author of The Nuts & Bolts Guide to Rigging and head coach of Washington College in Maryland gives the SpeedCoach XL a thorough review this month. Mike is a top-level instructor and the primary educational consultant for USRowing.

2010 Dad Vail

NK is proud to be a part of the 2010 Dad Vail regatta in Philadelphia. The Dad Vail regatta has a rich, long history in Philadelphia as the largest collegiate race in the United States. Each year, student athletes from more than 100 colleges and universities and a slew of enthusiastic spectators gather at the Schuylkill River for two days of racing.

NK has been making cutting edge rowing electronics in the Philadelphia Region for 25 years and continues to foster a strong connection with Philadelphia rowing community on Boathouse Row.

After a brief hiatus, NK is returning to compete in the Dad Vail Corporate Challenge. NK employees have medaled in the Dad Vail Regatta, graduated, and went on to medal in the Dad Vail Corporate Challenge. Cheer on NK's eight during the Corporate Challenge around lunchtime on Saturday.

Effect of Wind and Water Temperature on Speed

At NK headquarters, we get many questions from coaches on the accuracy of their splits. What is important to consider are the effects that wind and water can have on those numbers.

As we transition from duals into championship races, it's worthwhile to take a closer look at the environmental impact on boat speed. Besides personal preference (e.g. "I hate tailwind") there are physics that apply to all of us. The following are theoretical examples of wind effect on rowing shells:

Men's 1X
Wind Direction Wind Speed 500 Meter Pace 2,000 Meter Time
Tail 5 m/s 01:37.7 06:30.6
Tail 2 m/s 01:41.0 06:44.0
None 0 m/s 01:45.3 07:01.1
Head 2 m/s 01:51.9 07:27.4
Head 5 m/s 02:07.9 08:31.5
Men's 8+
Wind Direction Wind Speed 500 Meter Pace 2,000 Meter Time
Tail 5 m/s 01:22.2 05:28.9
Tail 2 m/s 01:24.0 05:36.1
None 0 m/s 01:26.5 05:46.0
Head 2 m/s 01:30.1 06:00.4
Head 5 m/s 01:38.4 06:33.7

As the weather gets warmer, water temperatures also change the game (about 3% at 86°). To make an extreme example: While you might have rowed a 7 minute 2k at the beginning of the season in late March, your time could be 13 seconds faster to 6:47 in late May at your Championships.

The impeller calibration however is only affected to a very minimal degree and does not need to be adjusted.

If you want to be truly prepared at your next race, make sure you have a Kestrel Weather Meter to know the current wind speed and water temperature. If you would like to test one, stop by NK's booth at our next regatta.
