I am a graduate student in wildlife management and I take wind readings practically every day doing waterfowl research in a variety of habitats, crawling through mud and water, and the Kestrel 1000 seems to do a good job. I was a little concerned, however, when the impeller fell out somehow. Easy to replace, but difficult to reinstall once it falls out. Overall it is a good unit if you just need wind information and with a variety of options for recording it.

I've bought it as a spare wind meeter for my yacht (sailibg at Baltic Sea). When stationary wind indicator stopped working I was quite happy to have K1000. Very usefull was "hold mode" for checking during night watches. I was really glad it does not have any blindig backlight then :). Very acurate and portable. That is all what I need.

I've used the Kestrel 1000 as a wind speed indicator while sailing on Lake Huron.. the display works great and is readable even in bright sun and the fact that the meter reads wind speed while facing away from the wind as well as into the wind is great.. It is an invaluable sailing tool..
